We survived this year's SXSW mostly on barbeque, sunshine, and tacos.
After our Canadian Music Week shows in chilly Toronto, we happily traded the winter coats for the heat and humidity of Texas, taking part evening showcases and an impromtptu afternoon acoustic set (we thought the venue had amps and drums) put on by Head Above Water Music.
The somewhat overwhelming scale of SXSW (2,000+ official showcasing bands, nevermind the audiences and un-official shows) was made manageable by the musical company of friends Ryan McAllister, Daniel Huscroft, Tim Lindberg, and Noah Gunderson - all together on each bill and forming the collective backing band.
Jay and Jer handled the rhythm section duties for all of the sets, Noah's sister Abbey joined in on violin, and the rest of us filled in as needed. Both evenings ended with everyone on stage, doing our part to export Canadian content, playing covers and sing alongs to songs by The Band and Neil Young.
Thank-you Texas and Texans for the warm welcome. We'll be back!
